Development APKs and Google Play testing
Development downloads provide experimental APKs outside Google Play. They may contain unfinished changes or regressions. Read the warning and installation instructions on that page before downloading.
If Android requests permission to install from a particular browser or file manager, grant it only if you choose to install that downloaded build. The development APK uses a different signing certificate from the Google Play version: it cannot replace a Play installation in place.
Later APKs from the same development channel can normally update an existing development installation while retaining its data. If Android refuses an update, check that you have not mixed the Play and development channels. Do not uninstall as the first troubleshooting step: uninstalling can remove local settings and saved phrases.
Closed Google Play tests require an eligible Google account and access to that test. A public development download does not enroll you in the Play test. Ask through this support site if you need help finding the appropriate testing route.
